Searching for the Spark

Analyzing interpersonal connections through psychology.

When you made a best-friend, fell in love for the first time, or instantly connected with someone - what was the exact moment you felt a real connection with them and why? Can we analyze how this spark is made? Can it be understood? Is there a methodology to it?

This is my final year-long cumulative project, synthesizing my four years of learning at York/Sheridan Design. It's a work in progress so I'll periodically update this page till it's complete - May 2021.

Design Sprint: Installation for Emotional Intelligence Analysis

One thing that really surprised me in my research was the differences between the east and the west parts of the world, and their differences in forming positive relationships based up conflicting cultural social cues. People who are better at coming across as emotionally intelligent in one part of the world might not be able to convey the same emotions in a different part of the world, so I wanted a way to analyze this in a way that does so without my perception of bias, This sprint is an installation set up with a camera, Arduino, and projector. When a person walks in front of the camera the analysis starts and when it's complete a person's results are shown in the form of tangible objects. This is a reflection of how the computer perceives a individuals emotional intelligence, people's results differ in the type of objects, the number of objects, and their sizes.

Design Sprint: Zine Exploring Complex Interpersonal Relationships within Psychological Models

A psychological model that can be intersected with emotional intelligence and interpersonal connections of people are what's known as the "Big Five" personality traits in psychology. To help understand how these are connected and represented in a contemporary context, I created a zine based on the five personalities of Openness, Conscientiousness, Extraversion, Agreeableness, and Neuroticism. Each spread is an ode to a respective personality and explores how each one is present in interpersonal relationships in this current period of time.
